Sun Protection by the Pool
With Wollongong’s high UV levels, protecting yourself and your family from sun exposure is just as important as having fun. Here are five sun safety tips to keep everyone protected while enjoying pool time.
1. Apply Sunscreen
Choose a water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it 20 minutes before getting into the pool. Reapply every two hours—or immediately after swimming or towel drying—for full protection.
2. Create Shaded Areas Around Your Pool
Use umbrellas, shade sails to provide relief from the sun during hot hours. Not only do they protect your skin, but they also help keep the pool area cooler and more comfortable.
3. Wear Protective Clothing and Swimwear
Long-sleeve clothes, swim shirts, and hats offer excellent UV protection. Look for clothing made specifically for outdoor water use, especially for young children.
4. Schedule Swimming when Low UV
Try to swim in the early morning or late afternoon when UV is low. This action can significantly reduce sunburn risk.
5. Use Sunglasses
Protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses, and keep plenty of cold water nearby to prevent dehydration—especially during long pool sessions in the sun.
